Getting Your Home Ready for the Spring Thaw

Spring is almost here, but in most places around the country the annual snow thaw is well underway and it's time to check the most important places around your home for winter damage or maintenance. Soggy yards, leaky gutter, and a cracked foundation are just a few things to look out for. Here are the top 4 things to get checked off your list right away.

1. Clear Snow and Ice Away from Your Home.

Make sure to clear snow at least 3 feet away from your home to prevent the water from seeping into your basement. Also, make sure drains and any outdoor lines are clear of snow and ice to prevent a backup in your sump pump or into your foundation.

2. Make Sure Gutters and Downspouts are Clear of Any Debris.

Just as leaves can build up in your gutters during the fall, snow and ice can build up during the winter.  It is a good idea to check all gutters and downspouts for any ice or snow blockage.  Check the downspout extenders to make sure they are free of obstructions and pointing away from the house.

3. Check the Grading Around the House

As snow is cleared from the area around the house, make sure that the grading or slope of the yard is pointed down, away from your home, to prevent water from seeping into your basement or foundation.  During the winter, some erosion or displacement can occur.  If that's the case, you may have to consider regrading your lawn or talking to a landscaping professional.

4. Inspect the Foundation

Inspect the foundation of your home for any cracks or areas of discoloration. If you see anything of concern, contact a foundation or waterproofing professional for an assessment.

Making sure your home is protected is an important job all year round.  GutterStuff foam filter inserts can give you peace of mind when it comes to your gutters, keeping them clear of debris and water flowing. Our filters are inexpensive, easy to install, and can fit just about ANY gutter!
